Insurance is a specialist area, and marine insurance even more so.  John spent twenty years working with two of the world’s best firms in this area, namely Holman Fenwick & Willan and Clyde & Co.  As well as having studied the subject as part of his London LLM, John has deep experience in this area since 1992 including:

  • Advising a Lloyds Syndicate and Insurance company on a US$2 million claim following damage to a pipeline off Thailand caused by the negligent positioning of  FPSO.
  • Providing a second opinion to an insurer following a six week arbitration against their insureds brought by an oil major for a US$ 50 million claim arising from damage to their SBM, following extensive land reclamation, and changes to current.  Correctly advising the insurer that their liability would be over 10 times higher than their legal advisors had thought.
  • Advising a BAR co-insurer on coverage and fabrication issues following US$3.5 million loss caused by the flooding of engine room on a pipe laying barge under construction in Singapore. “Jascon 5” [2006] EWCA Civ 889
  • Advising a broker on the recoverability of a Hull and Machinery claim following the collapse of a crane boom on a work barge.
  • Advising the insured owners of a top-side fabrication unit following a slip during load out and extensive damage.
  • Advising a lead Lloyds Syndicate and the following market in respect of their interest in a Welcar insurance programme following the collapse of a crane with 3 fatalities during rig construction in Singapore.  Further advising this Syndicate on the possible liabilities that could arise under their programme.
  • Advising an oil and gas company on an insurance recovery following a fire damaging a turbine on their Anoa platform.
  • Advising a Malaysia insurer following RM200 million in damage to new subsea pipelines during installation.
  • Advising American insurer following damage to heat exchange units being shipped to power station under construction in Thailand.
  • Advising Lloyd’s syndicate and American insurance company following a collision and damage to a cargo of pipes intended for an oilfield in Qatar.
  • Advising a salvor in relation to unpaid charges following an FPSO positioning exercise in Indonesia.
  • Acting for P&I club following collision between it’s members supply boat and an oil rig of Malaysia.
  • Acting for an oil company after damage to their FSO in Myanmar during bad weather.
  • Advising a Singapore insurance company in respect of a US$6 million claim against their insured, for contamination to a palm oil cargo.
  • Acting for a Singapore insurance company and giving a second opinion on a US$2 million claim following the grounding of a ship off Trincomalee and subsequent salvage and declaration of General Average.  This lead to a successful appeal: “Olympic Galaxy” [2006] EWCA Civ 528
  • Advising the insurers of a major oil and chemical terminal in Singapore following an over pressurization incident during nitrogen blanketing causing damage to a ship’s tanks and cargo.
  • Advising a shipowner on his claims against hull insurers and brokers in Indonesian litigation following the total loss of his vessel in a typhoon off Korea. “No 1 Dae Bu”[2006] EWHC 812
  • Advising in relation to the evidence supporting a large BI claim following damage to a subsea optic fibre cable prior to installation between Australia and Japan.
  • Advising American insurer on the wordings for it’s project cargo and bulk oil insurances.
  • Advising reinsurer of its liability following damage to container cranes during Cyclone Nargis in Burma.
